Composer's Kitchen 2018

Call for young composers: Composer's Kitchen 2018

Quatuor Bozzini is proud to announce the renewal of its partnership with Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Netherlands) for its Composer’s Kitchen 2018 professional residency, which takes place April 23-28 (Montreal) and September 3-7 (Utrecht, Netherlands). This year, Yannis Kyriakides will be the mentor composer for the participants throughout the two-phase residency.

“Dare to do what you’ve never dared before!”

Each edition of the Composer’s Kitchen is a chance to rigorously work in a creative, noncompetitive and relaxed atmosphere. Participants are encouraged to experiment beyond the limits of convention and to explore new and varied aesthetic styles in a way that their mastery in string quartet writing is strengthened to its highest degree during this enriching experience.

April 23-28, 2018                            Composer’s Kitchen Residence in Montreal
September 3-7, 2018                      Composer’s Kitchen Residence in Utrecht

Details about the residency
Composer’s Kitchen is a professional residency produced by Quatuor Bozzini since 2005 whose aim is to train emerging composers in string quartet writing. This unique event is like an “incubator” for original works, combining workshop, laboratory, playground, and masterclass. The new compositions are read, played, assessed, analysed, worked on, played again and performed in a final concert. The residency occurs over two phases: in the first phase, a week-long workshop occurs in Montreal (Canada); six months later, all the artists reunite in the Composer’s Kitchen second phase which takes place in partnership with an international organization (in the past: Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Sound and Music/Sound Scotland.) Quatuor Bozzini and the participants refresh and review in detail the pieces which have matured over the last number of months. Throughout the process, the composers will be supported by – other than Quatuor Bozzini – the presence of experienced mentors who are amongst the most important figures in new music creation.

International Markku Johansson competition in composition and arrangement

Launched by the Vantaa Pops Orchestra last autumn, the Markku Johansson competition in composition and arrangement will close in four months.  Compositions and arrangements for the full symphony orchestra may be lodged until 15 June 2018.  This competition is unique even by international standards, and the expectations are high.

This international competition is open to everyone, and it will be judged by Jaakko Kuusisto (conductor and the chair of the jury), Hans Ek(conductor, Sweden), Antti Rissanen (renowned trombone player and a big band professional) as well as Markku Johansson, the honorary conductor of the Vantaa Pops Orchestra.

The finalists chosen by the jury will be performed in the final concert, conducted by Nick Davies, on 17 September 2018 in the home town of the Orchestra.  The jury will also decide on how the prize money of 18 000 euros is divided between the two categories and the entries within them.

”The aim of this competition is to find new, high quality and recognisable light music for the full symphony orchestra, of the kind which orchestras around the world would like to include in their repertoire”, says Markku Johansson.

On 17 March, confirmed participants will be informed of the available instrumentation for the course, and will be asked to compose a piece (maximum of seven minutes’ duration) for a specific combination of instruments/voice drawn from from the complete ensemble. At that time, confirmed participants will be given the opportunity to request a specific instrumentation from among the performing forces available. Those requests will be honored to the greatest extent possible. Works involving electronics are very welcome but all equipment will have to be supplied by the composer.
By 24 May, new works to be performed on the final concerts will be completed. It is required that the participants' compositions will be completed well before the course begins so that the focus during the course can be on revising and refining. Scores and parts should be sent to Professor Hoffman a similar service) no later than Friday, 24 May, 2019, and copies of these should be emailed directly to the new work's performers at that time to allow sufficient time for individual preparation. It is hoped that the composers will also work on new pieces for the ensemble during the course, which can be rehearsed and discussed along with the previously completed pieces.
By 31 May, the remainder of the course tuition - 600 euros - will be due (150 + 450 = 600 euros total tuition), and will be payable to the UPBEAT International Summer Music School. Instructions for payment of the course tuition will be available on the UPBEAT website. NOTE: Your deposit of 150 euros ($170) is not due UNTIL and UNLESS you are accepted into the course. There is no application fee to apply to the program.
